About Me

About Me

Emily Redman is an emerging artist practicing in Sydney, Australia. Emily is currently completing a Master of Art Curating at the University of Sydney, after completing a Master of Fine Arts degree at the National Art School in Darlinghurst, where she also completed her undergraduate degree. Considered as a contemporary printmaker, Emily's most recent work combines traditional printmaking and photographic techniques, with a contemporary approach to materials.

Referencing both the traditional and the contemporary within her work, Emily's most recent work, inspired by previous experiences, social and political opinions and medical conditions, comments on the psychology surrounding the notion of judgement within contemporary society. Bringing a largely personal approach to this topic, Emily combines both the personal and the public, in an attempt to portray the behavioural consequences of the act of judgement upon individuals within our modern society.

Artist Statement

Artist Statement

The relationship between the psychology and physiology of the human body has been a constant source of conceptual guidance in my work. My motivation for creating art is quite personal, with the majority of my artwork conceptually based upon attributes of my personal life, whether that be personal experiences, social opinions or medical conditions. With references to these influences, and the combination of both traditional printmaking and photographic techniques, I pride myself on producing work that will illuminate the audience about aspects of themselves and the way they relate to others, particularly in relation to societal, political and personal problems. My work, with its straightforward conceptual message and graphic nature, aims to make the personal public in an attempt to change the acceptability of problematic societal aspects; and to enlighten the audience about certain issues that have previously been overlooked, hidden or considered too personal to enter the public domain.

My current work is a combination of the scientific and the traditions of portraiture, with the work analysing and discussing the emotive and structural aspects of human anatomy and behaviour – conceptual anatomy.
